AI visibility on Google AI Overviews

How Google AI Overviews (Google) decides which companies to name, what it reads before it answers, how it shows its sources, and what the report records for it.

Short answer

An AI Overview is the paragraph or list Google writes at the top of some results pages, from the pages it ranks for the query and related ones. Allow Googlebot in robots.txt. Keep snippets open: no nosnippet on the pages you want quoted, and a max-snippet that allows a sentence or two.

How Google AI Overviews decides who to name

An AI Overview is the paragraph or list Google writes at the top of some results pages, from the pages it ranks for the query and related ones. It is not shown for every query; commercial 'best X' questions get one more often than a brand's own name does, and the set of queries changes month to month. When shown, it names companies from the ranked pages and links to them.

What Google AI Overviews reads

AgentWhat it does
Googlebotthe same index as Search; there is no separate crawler and no separate opt-out beyond the snippet controls (nosnippet, max-snippet)

The lines to have in robots.txt, checked in seconds by the crawler access checker:

How Google AI Overviews shows its sources

Links beside the text, one set per overview, and a sources panel. The report records the referenced URLs and their order.

What the report records

The report fetches the live Google results page for each question with the buyer's country set and reads the AI Overview when Google shows one.

When Google showed no AI Overview for a question, the report drops that question from the denominator for this engine and says so ('no AI answer shown'). Scoring it as an absence would invent invisibility out of a page where there was no AI answer to appear in. When many questions in a category have no overview, that is itself a finding: the category is answered by the ordinary results.

What to do for Google AI Overviews

  • Rank for the question on Google. The overview is written from ranked pages, so the page that ranks for 'best X in city' is the page that gets quoted.
  • Keep snippets open: no nosnippet on the pages you want quoted, and a max-snippet that allows a sentence or two.
  • Answer the question in a sentence near the top of the page, then the detail. Overviews quote the summary sentence.

Questions

Why is Google AI Overviews 'not scored' on some questions in my report?

Google showed no overview for them. The report counts only questions where an AI answer existed, and tells you how many that was.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google?

Only through the snippet controls, which also shorten your ordinary result. Most companies should not; the overview is where the recommendation now sits for the questions that get one.
