Questions

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my visibility in ChatGPT?

Updated September 2026 · by Monish

Short answer

Not in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler; the search index is built by OAI-SearchBot, and live reads are done by ChatGPT-User. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of future training data and leaves search alone. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User removes you from answers.

The three agents

OAI-SearchBot builds the index ChatGPT searches. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's prompt sends ChatGPT to it. GPTBot collects pages for training. OpenAI documents them separately and they honour robots.txt separately.

What most sites got wrong in 2023

A wave of sites added 'User-agent: GPTBot / Disallow: /' to opt out of training. Fine. A smaller number added a wildcard block for anything with 'GPT' or 'AI' in the name, or blocked ChatGPT-User, and those sites are absent from ChatGPT's answers today. The crawler checker on this site reads your robots.txt and says which case you are.

The same pattern elsewhere

Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, not Search or AI Overviews. PerplexityBot is the index; Perplexity-User is the live fetch. Decide about training separately from search, and name each agent.
