What changes when the buyer is in India: the sources the engines read before they answer, the language they answer in, and what a site there needs to say.

Updated September 2026 · by Monish

Short answer

India questions name the city, and the engines treat Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune as distinct markets. The engines read Justdial and Sulekha and Practo before they answer. A page per city served with the locality names buyers use (Andheri, Koramangala, Gurgaon), since questions name localities, not cities.

What changes when the buyer is in India

India questions name the city, and the engines treat Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune as distinct markets. Price questions dominate ('under Rs 50,000', 'cheapest'), and the engines answer them from pages with rupee figures. Listing sites are unusually strong here: Justdial, Sulekha and Practo are named for consumer services before any provider.

The sources the engines read for India

SourceWhat it decides
Justdial and Sulekhafor consumer services; the engines read the listing pages as the market and name the sites themselves
Practofor doctors and clinics; the profile is quoted for specialty, fees and languages
Flipkart and Amazon.in'where to buy' is answered from these
Zomato and Swiggyrestaurants; the app rating is quoted
Naukri, Clutch and GoodFirmsIT services and agencies; Clutch and GoodFirms lists for who to hire, Naukri named for hiring questions
Economic Times, Inc42, YourStory, MouthShutbusiness questions and reviews; a MouthShut score is quoted for consumer brands

The report's 'sources the engines trust' table shows which of these were actually cited for your questions, and how often your own site was.

Language

English carries most of the questions the engines get from India, with Hindi and the regional languages growing. Hindi pages are read and quoted; few companies have them. Indian English phrasing ('best CA in Mumbai', 'good dentist near Andheri') is understood and the report writes questions in it.

What to put on the site for India

  • A page per city served with the locality names buyers use (Andheri, Koramangala, Gurgaon), since questions name localities, not cities.
  • Prices in rupees on the page, since most questions carry a budget.
  • The GST number and the registered address on the site, and for clinics the doctor's registration; the engines take these as the trust signal.

How the report runs for India

Every question is asked with the market set to India, so an engine that would otherwise assume the United States answers for India. The questions themselves are written with the country's cities and qualifiers where the site sells to one ('best accountant in Mumbai'), and the competitor discovery probe is asked for India too, so the rivals in the table are the ones a buyer in India is shown, not the global names.

Prices in the report are quoted as the engines quoted them, in INR where the answer used it.

Questions

Why is Justdial named instead of my company?

The engines read Justdial's listing page as the answer to a services question. The report files it as a directory, not a rival, and shows which providers were named alongside it. Being listed there, with the same description as your site, is the first fix.

Do the engines understand locality names?

Yes. 'Dentist near Andheri' is answered from pages that say Andheri. A site that says only Mumbai loses the locality questions.
